I just recieved a note from Adword. They reckoned I can gain over 300% if I increase my “limit” to $35 (CPR?)per day. I obliged them but I don’t think it will last at that price. My return is just not there. Too much expense and no return. I’m am attempting to set up an Aweber pop-up to “capture” vivitors but I need more quality vivitors. Any suggestions?

What is the most profitable field,Internet Marketing, Health etc to build email list fast for affiliate marketeers.

By michael.cheney. October 6th, 2006 at 7:33 am

Michael - you should try looking at www.perrymarshall.com he has a ton of excellent information on how to get more clicks for less money on the Google AdWords system.

Mohammed - this is a difficult question to answer here but ultimately neither you, nor I, can accurately answer this properly. The only way to get a definitive answer is to do market research to see what the most popular subjects are.

You should also bear in mind that it is very difficult to sell something unless you have a passion or knowledge and interest in it. For this reason I would turn this question around to you and ask;

What is your passion, what do you enjoy doing, what do you have an interest in that others share?

Michael,
I finally found a niche to get a list started, but 50% or more of the leads don’t finish the opt-in process by clicking the link in the aweber email. So, there’s lots of “unverified” emails in my list. Do you have this same problem?

By Graeme. October 6th, 2006 at 10:38 am

Hi,
Am in the process like you at the moment, of creating a project, so I can appreciate the crazy time you are having, but bear in mind I have a fulltime job on top of this, and am blind and therefore this entire product creation business takes a lot longer.
My question to you: what is the best way to attract JV partners who have a responsive list of buyers if you are a complete unknown nobody, but have a great product that everybody needs and will make a lot of money for both of us?

By the way: I have something for your product launch if you are interested, and will make people be able to apply what you say in your course virtually free.
I will need to limit the below offer because, I will need to work one-on-one with each person to make the following offer work:
each person who purchases from you will receive from me totally free of charge:
a top level domain name of their choice,
6 months hosting toreally blast everything off for them.
This is pro hosting that people would normally pay £25+ to receive and I will fully integrate into payment systems of their choice such as paypal, etc. so this is a fully integrated offer.

Please get back to me with your thoughts.

Cheers

Graeme

My site is a blog on blogger. I feel that I’m at a huge disadvantage because I can’t use pop-ups and only have one page to work with.

Is there an effective way to build a list on a blogpage? Am I at a disadvantage, or am I missing an opportunity?

Thanks!

By Carlos. October 6th, 2006 at 11:02 am

Hello. Was wondering what conversion rate you shoot for in your list sign ups divided by people that purchase after getting your last email? Thanks.

By michael.cheney. October 6th, 2006 at 2:39 pm

Jeffrey - I don’t have this problem because I don’t do double-optin. You could improve it by showing people exactly what to do on your signup thankyou page and offering them an ethical bribe once they confirm.

Graeme -

>what is the best way to attract JV partners >who have a responsive list of buyers if you >are a complete unknown nobody, but have a >great product that everybody needs and will >make a lot of money for both of us?

Find the JVs you want then approach them with an offer they can’t refuse after first;
- joining their list
- becoming an affiliate of theirs
- buying their product
- hopefully selling their product

>I will need to limit the below offer because, >I will need to work one-on-one with each >person to make the following offer work

Thank you for your kind offer but I’m hoping that like last time, 3000 people or so will buy it in the first week so what you propose is not practical but thank you for the offer all the same.

Kevin - having just on page is not your challenge. It’s not having control. Pop overs are great but they’re not essential. Ideally I recommend you look to get your own website and domain name and start doing this from something you have more control over.

Carlos - think I understand your question. On some optin pages I aim for 50% optin rate. In terms of % of subscribers who go and buy something I recommend it depends on too many variables;
- product
-quality of email I write
- price of the product
- match to their needs
- etc.

So I wouldn’t want to give a specific number as might give you a false impression (either too high or too low).

By Ethan. October 6th, 2006 at 2:42 pm

Hey
I am totally new at building a quality list that has people who will repeatedly buy from me. I need some guidance on how to get the kind of client that you got that made you that much money from one email.

By michael.cheney. October 6th, 2006 at 5:15 pm

Ethan - it all comes down to your approach. The more valuable information and advice you can give people on your list the more they will respect you. You need to make steps towards becoming an authority in your chosen niche and helping people out as often as you can.

If you focus on always over delivering on value and helpful advice and content the sales will come.

Good luck!

By Adran. October 6th, 2006 at 11:00 pm

Hi,
How to advertise the products to free-article subscriber without scare them off?Thanks

By Harry. October 7th, 2006 at 10:12 pm

Michael, I have two suggestions to help your “11 days to list profits” product launch become totally jaw dropping!

1) All efforts of traffic promotion to your squeeze pages are as a newbie not Michael Cheney. Let me clarify, use an anonymous name like “Chen Michaels”. So you can clearly demonstrate to newbies that your techniques are all realistic and possible. Obviously you continue to promote Michael Cheney’s 11 days to list profits, but as a newbie. This spin would also generate huge volumes of blog discussion/traffic. Just an idea I thought up a few minutes ago.

2) Would you consider creating an squeeze page example (in 11 days to list profits) for a product that can provide a superior method of providing credibilty on every long sales copy letter?

I would allow you 100% total profit share if you created the squeeze page, kept the subscriber list and created a 10 page mini report that you can sell! I would also provide the marketing concept/tools and a 10 page help manual that you can rewrite with full resell rights. This would an interesting chapter in list building, would you agree?

Harry

By michael.cheney. October 8th, 2006 at 1:56 pm

Adran - the key to advertising products to your subscribers without ’scaring them off’ as you say, is to change your mindset. You are not advertising - you are providing them with value-packed additional resources that you have hand-picked and personally tested to make sure they will move people forward towards success.

Harry - the methods I explain in the videos can be used by anyone and I won’t be relying on my own list, online contacts of own products to make this happen.

Thanks for your idea about the squeeze page example. I have already recorded the videos that explain how to create your own squeeze page and which tools to use to do this. It’s been great fun putting this course together as I know that when you go through it you are going to learn so much and that at the end of it you have your own list, your own website and your own online squeeze page and thank you page!

Further to Jeffrey’s questions:

Isn’t double opt in a legal UK requirement? According to http://www.theregister.co.uk/2003/12/10/uk_antispam_law_goes_live/ visitors need to opt-in to receive emails.

By Ola Aroyehun. October 9th, 2006 at 7:11 am

Michael

I am just starting out on internet marketing and I have one simple questions. What is the best way to submit my site (when I purchase it) to the search engines?

Ola

By michael.cheney. October 9th, 2006 at 8:22 am

Law Man - it is only a legal requirement to have someone opt in ONCE as it states;

“Revised UK regulations will mean online marketers can send e-mail pitches and SMS messages only to consumers who have agreed beforehand to receive them”

This just means that you can’t email someone totally out of the blue and they must first request (ONCE) to join your list.

Ola - your question isn’t really related to building a list but anyway.. :-) You just go to the search engine and almost always near the bottom there is a link that says “Submit” or “About Us” where you can find how to get listed.

Thanks,

Michael

By Reinaldo Figueroa. October 9th, 2006 at 10:21 am

I would like to first thanks you Michael for developing great products, I learned adsense from you. Your videos covered every little step, so anyone could get involved(I found that the basic info was really basic, but the advanced stuff really made a BIG diffrence in my bottom line.)

Well my question for you is, I know that you have in the past used getresponse for your Auto Responder, that to my knowledge is double-opin. but you said you no longer use double optin. What services would you recommend to have single-opt subscribers.

Thanks
Ray

By Gene. October 9th, 2006 at 10:41 am

I just completed my website and starting to focus on Listbuilding.I have a form to fill out and am offering a gift.
If you go to my sight do you think this is the right way to capture addresses or is there a better way?
Thanks
Gene

By michael.cheney. October 9th, 2006 at 4:32 pm

Ray - I still use GetResponse and you CAN use single optin with it as I do. It involves changing some of the behind-the-scenes settings but I explain how to do this in the videos. You basically just keep ‘Imports’ as double optin and everything else as single optin.

Gene - try including your photo, a list of benefits and a name to the ‘gift’ that you are giving away.

Thanks,

Michael

By Todd. October 9th, 2006 at 4:57 pm

Hi Michael,

I have never used a list and I am fairly new to the internet marketing world. I work a full J.O.B. and only have about 1 hour or so per day after family obligations to put towards my internet activities.

I currently spend most of my time developing content for my site to keep my adsense income growing and that has been successfully growing about 20% per month since I started seriously persuing it in March (had it for two years on my site but wasn’t smart enough to set a high goal originally). Investment income is very low at the moment.

Where and on what would you suggest for me to best spend my time, short that it is so that 5 years from now I could do this full time if I desired to do so?

By michael.cheney. October 9th, 2006 at 5:11 pm

Todd - I started out years ago doing this in my spare time and if I had my time over I wish SO MUCH that I had started building my own list sooner. So my advice to you would be to start capturing people’s email addresses by offering them something free and of value in return. Make steps towards becoming an ‘authority’ of sorts in your area of passion and give people helpful and interesting advice on the same passion via your list.

My 2 cents! Good luck!

Michael

By Judith Howard. October 10th, 2006 at 7:16 am

Hi Michael,

I have a content website on debt consolidation with about 60 articles. I am in the process of optimizing them for the search engines. I have written 3 articles that I have submitted to article directories and am continuing on getting links, right now my incoming links are about 80.

This website has alot of great content on it along with some affiliate products and adsense relating to debt.

However, I am still not seeing traffic although I have had the website live for about 4 months.

Can I do anything else that will speed up the process of getting traffic to my site?

Appreciate any help. Many thanks Michael and continued success to you.

Judith

By michael.cheney. October 10th, 2006 at 1:00 pm

Judith - you are heading along the right lines! You can maybe consider publishing a new article once a week and submit it the article directories. Also think about Pay Per Click or if you’re looking for totally free methods - develop a free report on debt consolidation and ask some financial website owners to feature it or send it to their lists (make sure it has your link in and maybe some affiliate products you promote!).

Thanks,

Michael

By Law Man. October 12th, 2006 at 11:39 am

Judith,

To follow on from Michaels comment - you may want to invest in the Adsense Videos. That will teach you more about how to optimise the adsense on your site - at the moment it looks like you earn very little from it.

Also, perhaps investing in some cheap webspace may be a good idea to remove the netfirms banner and their Adsense at the top of you page.

Mr. Cheney,

You claimed that with US$50, we can have our web site developed. Such a site would be reponsive and interactive enough to take up the marketing initiatives and traffic you’re proposing. How can this be done? What would be the steps to take to ensure its marketable power and its words and pictures interaction abilities? What should we choose as logo, slogan, font, pictures and colours for this site?
Thanking your support and valuable advices.

Hello Michael-Great Video. I was wondering what is an average number of opt-ins someone should expect after about 30days? I am ready for Nov 1st to come around to get my hands on those videos you are creating. Thanks for all of your insite and help.

Jeff

By michael.cheney. October 16th, 2006 at 2:18 pm

Greg, you asked:

“Would you recommend renting or purchasing names?”

I personally believe you are better to build a list of your own names that you have control and ownership of. So paying for advertising to make people aware of your list so they can join it is good in my book, but just paying money to get a ready made list or contact might not be as fruitful. I wouldn’t recommend renting a list although you could consider doing a list swap where you cross promote with another list owner for free and everyone benefits.

Ali, you asked:

“You claimed that with US$50, we can have our web site developed. Such a site would be reponsive and interactive enough to take up the marketing initiatives and traffic you’re proposing. How can this be done?”

Your site will have graphics, text and can also have audio and video. It will be used to get people who see it to join your list. The traffic generation methods will be based on non-search engine optimization routes, primarily because of speed and simplicity.

Debbie, thank you for your kind comments. I look forward to hearing how you get on! :-)

Jeff, you asked:

“I was wondering what is an average number of opt-ins someone should expect after about 30days?”

This is an impossible question to answer! Let’s just say you are going to building a list of golfers. There are millions of people who love golf so you have a large target market and if you can offer them a ‘carrot’ to join your list then you will get lots of subscribers.

But what if you are building a list of spacemen because that is your market. There are maybe 100 living spacemen in the world! But if you got just 1 on your list and sold them a spaceship (excuse my metaphor here!) then you wouldn’t care that you only had one person on your list!

So what I’m trying to say hear is that it is not the NUMBER of people that you have on your list, it is the amount of PROFIT that you can get from that list and the QUALITY of the list in terms of how qualified each person is and how likely they are to buy something ultimately.

Just getting numbers onto a list is pointless - what you need is to get TARGETED prospects onto your list that are going to convert into sales!

Keep your questions coming!

Michael

I tried using Google adwords. $100 over two months and 0 buyers. Talking about frustrating! Plus I don’t understand the whole concept of “bidding” on words. Mike, do you use Adwords? Is it really worth it? How do you decide what words to use and how much to bid?

By michael.cheney. October 27th, 2006 at 12:58 pm

Carole - I occasionally use AdWords but not to build my list. If you want the best advice on AdWords so that you spend less and get the most clicks you need to listen to what Perry Marshall says: http://www.perrymarshall.com

You can also search for “perry marshall” at http://video.google.com and you will find a couple of free videos with Perry in.

Michael, I have a small form on my sizzle page with 3 lines of information for the contact to fill out (NAME, EMAIL, PHONE). After my potential customer fills out their information, they are redirected to a business overview. My business overview has a total of 6 lines of specific information (NAME, EMAIL, PHONE, PHONE2, BEST TIME TO CONTACT, DESIRED INCOME LEVEL). Do you recommend one form? Is it easier to avoid confusing people and losing customers? Am I asking too much of customers?

Hi Michael,

I’ve been on your mailing for a while now and like your style. My question to you is this: How many people do you have on your mailing list and how long has it take to get that number?

As someone who makes a full time living selling other people’s products on the internet, I appreciate how important it is to have residual income so the repeat sales are not so important as I mostly deal with companies who reward me for sales from the referrals of the customers I bring them (multi-level marketing).

By Lesley Livingstone. November 3rd, 2006 at 5:06 pm

Hello Michael
I am in the same boat as Melody - a complete ‘newbie’- I don’t have a website either and I don’t know what a ‘list’ is. Would you go back to basics for me (and anyone else with such little knowledge?)

By michael.cheney. November 3rd, 2006 at 5:28 pm

Aytac asked:

“What is better; to do double-optin or normally without double-optin.”

You will get a higher quality clean list if you ask people to confirm (double optin) to join your mailing list. It will also mean you are less prone to spam complaints as you will have all the info of the person that subscribed when they double optin. I, however, still use single optin but should probably move to double optin at some point!

BoB O asked;

“What is the best approach to choosing what should show in the FROM Line when you don’t have a recognizable name in the niche?”

Great question. You need to put something in the question line that people are expecting when they sign up. You should always use your name in your marketing e.g. “Join John Doe’s Ezine” or “Take John Doe’s 5 Part Mini Course”. This way you will start to build your name up - people will come to trust and buy from your name so this is a great way to get started.

Justin asked;

“Do you recommend one form? Is it easier to avoid confusing people and losing customers? Am I asking too much of customers?”

The quicker, the better. The best optin results I’ve found are just first name and email address but ultimately it depends on what info you need and why you need it. I would say just get their name and email address initially to get as many people as possible on the list and then start building a relationship with them via email and ask for more details from them later by offering a special report behind a questionnaire etc.

George asked;

“I have a list of certified emails and will be introducing myself to them for the first time
and this will be my first attempt at building a list. The question is: How do I introduce myself and get them to visit my website. I am thinking of using some form of inducement e.g ebook, report, software. The problem is I do not know these people, in other words they are not targetted.”

Tricky one! Just be yourself. Be honest. Explain your story behing why you are contacting them and why they don’t know you yet. And yes - give them an incentive but be clear to them that that is what it is.

Duane asked;

“I have a few blogs covering my favorite music artists. How can I turn my blog visitors into subscribers and then turn those subscribers into paying customers of a product or service?”

You need to find out what these visitors really want. What are they desperate and hungry for? More celebrity news? Celebrity pictures? Gossip? Find out what it is (you could ask them on your site) and then give it to them via email if they optin. You could compile a list of the best celebrity resources online with reviews for each one and only give people access to it if they join your list.

Shaun asked;

“Hi Michael, fellow Uk-er here, if it makes any difference, probably not, but would you ever consider 1-on-1 direct mentoring in exchange for publicity/testimonials etc?”

Really sorry Shaun - I just don’t have the time! I do occasionally offer mentoring programs when I speak at events - I’m doing the World Internet Summit in Singapore in November for example..

Jason asked;

“I am currently finishing writing an ebook on a niche hobby subject that there curently isnt anything like this on the market.
I was thinking of putting up a web site before it goes on sale and getting people to sign up for more details, promising them sneak previews etc. Do you think this is a good idea for a launch of this kind?”

Yes - this sounds like an excellent approach. Make sure there is a market out there though and that people in it have money to spend on getting solutions to their problems.

Paul asked;

“Can you tell me what video software you use to record your adsense videos and other promotional videos please?”

Of course - Camtasia, goto www.techsmith.com

More answers soon - keep those questions coming! I will answer EVERY SINGLE ONE PERSONALLY! And no - I DON’T sleep! :-)

Hi Michael,
I recently read some interesting information, regarding US companies out-doing european companies in direct mail, due to the fact that the US companies will rent their lists out to each other where as the european companies wouldn’t.

This instantly caused me to shudder at the prospect seeing as everyone now literally has to state that they wont do this. But as ever an optimist, my next thought was that they way around this is definitely JV. Would I be right in saying that, as I think it scared a lot of people when they first read that quote?

My other question relates to how general or specific you are in the topic matter for capturing emails. For example, I have a web site offering free videos on ‘how to use tools’ and then free info on ‘using tools’ and then ‘free tools’ and so on. The web site is based around one particular field and interest but does it pay me to have a different list for each, or is it easier to keep them under one umbrella so to speak?

The web site I speak of is the link in my name.

Best Wishes and Thankyou
Dean

I wonder if you have a method or ever thought of “labeling” parts of your list o slice them in such a way that you could aim better and give them a more precise product or be more precise on their needs for instance the email frequency they rather have.

I mean, you are obviously treating various targets with all this 50 thousand people on your list and it is not homogeneous. You probably collected them from various places (I know how you got me and there was nothing to do with adsense, lists, money making or anything of the sort…), I am sure you have people who buy certain products more then other products you sell, or those who rather have an email a day while others rather have only the most important and interesting ones, or maybe your own products.

If you thought about that I’ll appreciate your elaboration and suggestions on how to do that. (I have no experience with GetResponce or any other list collectors or autoresponces, and I wonder if there is such a service at all)

Many thanks for your time

Mike

Sorry, one last question, how do you do that red pen on the screen thing - sorry it’s not related but I’ve searched hours for a tool like that (a free one - maybe that’s why I can’t find it)

Hi Michael

Like you, I love the Camtasia Studio package. Its great to see that the latest release allows you to convert your videos into podcast versions.

However, there is a risk of any video being streamed online not playing smoothly. How do you ensure that your videos have sufficient buffering (sorry if this questions is a bit technical).

Thanks

Hiya Michael & Max,

All the list building info I’ve seen so far focuses pretty much on writing to sell to people about internet marketing.

Do you talk about your experience with list building in other areas - for example, your Seniority.co.uk site?

I’m building a good list around a Christmas niche product, but am not sure what to do with it!

All the best,
Jen

P.S. Love the personal touch with the video!

I want to generate luxury cruise guest leads. If I am starting from scratch with no leads. How would you start and where would you start to generate this leads?

By Brian. November 3rd, 2006 at 7:08 pm

Hi Micheal,
I havent even taken your course and you’ve got my wheels turning! I have a website and Ebay store selling specialized computer parts. It is a very specialized niche that in the beginning (4 years ago) was all mine! However, now the market is becoming saturated with competitors and profits are much less. It’s time for some super strategy!
I am considering offering 10% discounts in exchange for newsletter signups. Newsletters would contain info, articles, members only discounts etc. Discounts will bring more customers, and more customers will bring more signups. What do you think? I just joined aweber as well.
Best regards, Brian

Hi Michael, I have to say that I think your an interesting character. If your extremely successful at what you do, as you say, why bother to bring in outsiders, like myself, when you can replicate your success by expanding your own empire? In all honesty it sounds a bit scammy. Maybe I am a little to sceptical. If I am that way its because of contact with people, online & offline, that have turned out to be undesirable or worse.
If your fairdinkum, if you want to sell your business idea for others to benefit from because you really are a good bloke thats fine. You still have an opportunity to sell me. Send me an a no B.S. email and I will read it. If and when I think your fairdinkum

Hi Michael
Where do I start I am 63 years old and I want to start to build a business on the internet.

I am trying to get my head around all the different things that other people say that I should be doing to build an internet business. I suppose I am one of your silver surfers. You sound like a down to earth person. I understand the most important thing is to build your own list, can you tell me the quickest way to do this.Derek

Michael,

One think is get leads and another convert them into customers.

I know that you can use your autoresponder to try to convert them but the question is…

What do you say in each message (cronology) and how many you should send?

or exist another alternative?

My name is Kalmar Emeric,
and I am from Romania( Nadia Comaneci-Montreal, first 10 in the history of gymnastics’s, Elie Wiesel – Peace Nobel Prize winner etc.)
My country is not listed at Click Bank, Pay Pal, Money bookers, E-gold etc., yet, maybe from 2007, when we enter in E.U.(on the back door ?!), they will accept us. I can pay with VISA credit card, but I can’t, and I didn’t received any money from any affiliate programs that I joined until now. If 96 % of Internet businesses fail, my chances for succeeding are 1000 times lower than the average.
Although I’m proud that before your great launch, I was advertising you, just for fun and because I really like you (and your dog ), at Yahoo Answers ( now I know that, that was Social Bookmarking – Mr.J.P.Schoeffel- Ethiccash, you should check that).
I believe that the most important thing for a living creature is dignity, and the words which should be banned from the Internet are not BS, a**, f****, etc., but words and expressions like: idiot proof, financially handicapped, monkey say – monkey do, tire kickers, rats, schmuck etc., when are used to put labels on the less fortunate.
Thank you very much for the possibility to learn from you, and despite the fact you wouldn’t get to much money from me, I promise you that I will do everything what I can, to promote you, because I like you’re style.
Getting to the point: How could I earn money, fast, easy, lazzy, etc.? ~:-)~

Thank you again, good luck.

Hi, Michael-

As usual I’m smiling happily at your irrepressible good nature and your genuinely kind interest in, and concern for all of us questioners who trust your advice and sincerity.

I don’t know how you keep up the affable tone and awesome pace! Have you taught Max to type?

Anyway, reading all these questions/comments has been educational. I look forward to your oncoming “list building” video series. I got the Adsense videos when you first launched that now-famous product and still have not dug out and polished all the jewels in that! I anticipate digging through the list building suggestions/instructions/concepts for a long time to come while, I hope, implementing your shared advice and help in stages, as fast as I can!

Okay. This wasn’t a question. It was just another of the thousands of testimonials you get every day. That’s because you’re worth it! Oh - I DO have a question! What brand of Sincerity Pills are you taking every morning?

Andeats asked;

“Hi Michael, I created a 10 day ecourse about a year ago, and all I sent the subscribers were the ecourse, nothing else.

I just checked my stats and I have over 5,200 subscribers who have opted in to my ecourse.

what is the best way to carry on in contact with them?”

With caution! ;-) You need to tread carefully if you haven’t contacted them in a year and the chances are that a lot of them will have unsubscribed in that time or changed their email address.

In any case - just be up front with them and say you rediscovered the list or found it gathering dust. Be honest and make your apologies for not contacting them sooner and give them something for free too to say sorry!

Melody asked;

“How do I get started building a list before I even have a product or website?”

You don’t need your own product as you can promote other people’s and get paid commission by them plus then you don’t have to worry about customer service.

But before all that you need to find your market. This sample video from the course will help you; http://www.11daystolistprofits.com/video/list-profits-091006/

Martin asked;

“can you please list some of the most suitable products (or at least TYPES of products) for list building? Some products just have to be more suitable for list building than the others, aren’t they?”

If you mean products to sell then it can be anything. But the important point here is not to start by choosing the products. You have to start by choosing or finding the market - the group of people with a shared problem or challenge.

You then help people overcome that challenge with the products you recommend. But the market comes first.

Roland asked;

“do you suggest using a third party provider or is it not better from a control and cost point of view [long-term]to have your own software to do it? what do you think of mailloop from the internet marketing center?”

That’s 2 questions! :-)

Don’t use your own solution - it will kill you in the end through wasting time and because you can’t deal with email deliverability handling it yourself. Believe me I’ve tried!

I’ve no experience of Mailloop - I use GetResponse http://www.getresponsefast.com and have been using them for years.

Dee asked;

“What are the top 3 ways to build a Responsive list without spending money. How long should that take to see results?”

That’s FOUR questions!

#1. Give something of value away for free
#2. Use your existing contacts to start the list and get them to recommend others
#3. Create a ‘viral’ campaign that gets forwarded on from one person to the next

Speed? You could be up and running in days.

Jessika asked;

“I’ve built a list of over 10,000 triple opt-in
subscribers in the last 6 months using the
Co-Reg service at http://worldwidelists.com
I also use AutoResponsePlus to email my list.
Problem: I can’t seem to make ANY real profits
from this list.
I would like to get atleast 50cents per subscriber in income per month but just can’t seem to do it.”

You either have a problem with targeting (you’re getting the wrong people on the list) or a problem with trust (they don’t trust you enough to buy from you).

Be up front when you are getting people on the list about what it is they are getting and offer more valuable free information to people on the list. Go the extra mile particularly in the early stages to make sure you develop trust with them.

Paul asked;

“How many people do you have on your mailing list and how long has it take to get that number?”

The number is totally irrelevant as my last answer proves. You can have 100,000 and make NO SALES or you can have 100 and make lots of sales.

It’s not HOW BIG your list is, it’s HOW BIG your relationship is with each person on your list.

To answer your question though - over 50000 in a few years. I could triple that number in 24 hours if I wanted to but it wouldn’t benefit anyone.

A better question might be; “How great is your relationship with each person on your list and how long as taken you to foster and create that?” ;-)

Lesley asked;

“I don’t have a website either and I don’t know what a ‘list’ is. Would you go back to basics for me (and anyone else with such little knowledge?)”

Sure. A list is just a collection of email addresses from people who want you to send them information on a certain topic. You give them valuable info via email and in return they give you their permission to send them emails. You build up the relationship with them by helping them and then you can recommend products to them to help them further. If they buy the products you make money. That’s it in a nutshell.

More answers soon! Keep your questions coming!

Dear Michael,
I’ve really got a lot of information from your videos and emails. Thank you. What is the first thing you do to build a list….after you have created a website and products to sell?
I find that I get visitors but no one buys anything or stays long enough.

By Tony Principe. November 4th, 2006 at 9:36 am

I have a mailing list which numbers in excess of 22,000. These are single opt-in leads that are/have been receiving info from me on a Home Business oppty. The campaign is a series of emails sent over a 3 month period. These are Active Leads (originally the list was at at 32,000+) and these prospects have not opted out. I have the original opt-in date, time, and IP address.

I paid over $600 to build this list and have been looking for a new ‘AR’ to handle another marketing campaign designed to qualify these leads and convert them to “double opt-in”.

Because of the size of this list, I need a AR that will allow me to import this list automatically. I’m sure you can understand me not wanting to have to import manually.

I am finding out that the AR’s that can do automatic import also say “if they were purchased leads they are SPAM”. Why are these leads considered SPAM when I paid good money for them, have permission to send them email, and, in some cases, they are currently receiving email from me?

Also, can you recommend an AR company that can help me do what I want to do? Thank You.

Tony

By Norbert. November 4th, 2006 at 12:50 pm

How would you do this???

Let say I have these niches:

- Acid Reflux
- Acne
- Alzheimer disease
- Cellulite
- Cosmetic Surgery
- Depression
- and so on

Which one is better??

Option 1 - All on one site: this would be good, because even if I update 1 or 2 categories, my whole site is regularly updated, so in the eyes of the search engines the site look great. BUT, when building a list, someone who is interested in Acne and opts in, might not want to see emails about Cellulite. So, how do I know what the person wants to opt in for?

Option 2 - All topics on different sites: this would mean a different site for all nich, which is cool for the list building; the person who opts in get only Acne related emails. BUT, many sites have to be updated regularly, vs. one, with more new content, so it requires much more work.

Which one do you think is better??? Or is there a better way???

Thanks,
Norbert

I am interested in the technology you used to make the video that you used to get me to your blog. What technologies and/or server configuration(s) were used to 1) display the text message overlay that appeared during the video, and 2) jumped to your webpage after it was completed? Thanks in advance.

I notice that many people are interested in the video software you use. Like you, I have a copy of Camtasia but the price keeps most newbies away.

Dean asked;

“My other question relates to how general or specific you are in the topic matter for capturing emails. For example, I have a web site offering free videos on ‘how to use tools’ and then free info on ‘using tools’ and then ‘free tools’ and so on. The web site is based around one particular field and interest but does it pay me to have a different list for each, or is it easier to keep them under one umbrella so to speak?”

It sounds like they’re all closely related so I would get everyone on one list. What you can then do though is split out the list by getting people to filter themselves based on their preferences. So you would have a master list with everyone on it and sublists by interest area or subdivision. I do this and have many, many sub lists.

Mike asked;

“I wonder if you have a method or ever thought of “labeling” parts of your list o slice them in such a way that you could aim better and give them a more precise product or be more precise on their needs for instance the email frequency they rather have.”

Yes, as stated above - you can do this. It can pay dividends to tailor your mailings to certain people though if you start out at the very beginning by focusing on a group of people that has a shared challenge or set of problems then often you can email to them all at the same time and still get excellent response rates.

Dean asked;

“Sorry, one last question, how do you do that red pen on the screen thing - sorry it’s not related but I’ve searched hours for a tool like that (a free one - maybe that’s why I can’t find it)”

Camtasia - www.techsmith.com

Geoff asked;

“How do you ensure that your videos have sufficient buffering (sorry if this questions is a bit technical).”

I have no idea! I’m not a techie. I started using Camtasia about 5 minutes after I bought it and have never read the manual or instructions and it seems to work okay!

Jen asked;

“All the list building info I’ve seen so far focuses pretty much on writing to sell to people about internet marketing.
Do you talk about your experience with list building in other areas - for example, your Seniority.co.uk site?
I’m building a good list around a Christmas niche product, but am not sure what to do with it!”

You can use these principles in ANY marketplace - it doesn’t have to be internet marketing it’s just marketing to different people over the internet. The techniques are exactly the same.

As for your list around a Christmas niche product - selling the product to them is a start and after that look for other complimentary products that you might be able to promote. Alternatively, see if you can offer advertising in your emails to companies targeted that market or if you’re not in it for the long term you could consider selling the list.

Kyle asked;

“I want to generate luxury cruise guest leads. If I am starting from scratch with no leads. How would you start and where would you start to generate this leads?”

Get a piece of paper out. Write down on it as many places as you can that you think these people will visit online. Build up a picture of their online activity. Then visit these places and start to find out what problems and questions these people have. Then answer these problems in something you give away to these people when they join your list. Ta da! You could do all this in about an hour or two.

Brian asked;

“I am considering offering 10% discounts in exchange for newsletter signups. Newsletters would contain info, articles, members only discounts etc. Discounts will bring more customers, and more customers will bring more signups. What do you think?”

Superb idea! Give people a discount voucher / coupon / redemption code in one of the emails you send out. You could get a coder to create something so that they get more discount if they refer 3 new subscribers! Also, rather than eat into your profit margins you could just give installation / user guides / manuals via the signup to encourage people to sign up and this wouldn’t cost you anything.

John asked;

“If your extremely successful at what you do, as you say, why bother to bring in outsiders, like myself, when you can replicate your success by expanding your own empire?”

Because I enjoy helping people and giving back. Look, I’ve made a LOT of money online in the past few years (my last product has done $500K to date), do you really think I need to make these blog posts for the money?!

I’m not telling you this to boast - just to make a point. I like helping people, I’ve been lucky enough to be successful at this so what’s wrong with helping others do the same.

Derek asked;

“I understand the most important thing is to build your own list, can you tell me the quickest way to do this.”

I’ve already answered this a few times but in a nutshell;

- Find a market that has a shared problem
- Make sure they have money to get a solution
- Offer them some answers via email for free
- Give them offers that give the full solutions

Alberto asked;

“What do you say in each message (cronology) and how many you should send?”

Start slowly and don’t try to sell or promote anything in the first few messages. Just keep pouring on the value and take it from there. After say 5 or so messages you can start introducing offers but be up front about it and state that that is exactly what they are.

Bernard asked;

“What is the feature for a website must have to build a list building?”

A landing page with benefits, headline and a strong message explaining what you are offering that is free and of value to each subscriber.

Stanley asked;

“I was just curious. How long does it usually take to build a list of 10,000 if you start from scratch?”

You could do it in 5 minutes by buying it but the quality would be terrible. You could build it up slowly and have the best quality where 50% of the list always buy. It is impossible to answer. Look for my previous answer about quality vs. quantity.

Daniel asked;

“Where can I obtain mail lists free of cost. I don’t have anything to offer free - to obtain their id”

www.givemesomethingfornothingbecauseiwanttogetrichquick.com

Ariel asked;

“What software do you use to create that optin box with name and email? Also Can you suggest the best product out there which can easily send out newsletters to those list of people with less effort on my part?”

For the optin page I use;

http://www.marketingmakeovernow.com

For sending emails I use;
http://www.getresponsefast.com

Kalmar asked;

“How could I earn money, fast, easy, lazzy, etc.? ~:-)~”

Get a job! Seriously - this is not a lazy solution. It is easy because you just follow simple steps but it is not for you if you are lazy.

Clem asked;

“How are you able to build a responsive list if you don’t have your own product, and how long can one expect it to take in that scenario?”

You find the market first and find out what questions it has. Then you answer those questions in the ‘bait’ you offer to get people onto your list. Then you offer them other people’s products and get paid commission when you make a sale. You can do it in 11 days. :-)

Johanna asked;

“What brand of Sincerity Pills are you taking every morning?”

Thanks for the kind comments by the way! It’s just me - what you see is what you get which is why I am answering these on here on a Saturday night when ‘normal’ people are vegetating in front of the TV!

Just because I’ve ‘made it’ online doesn’t mean I’ve forgotten how hard it is when you start off and I want you to feel the excitement of getting your first sale and your first 1000 subscribers and beyond!!

Christobel asked;

“What is the first thing you do to build a list….after you have created a website and products to sell? I find that I get visitors but no one buys anything or stays long enough.”

Turn your website around from a ‘product display zone’ to a ‘everything you could need as a person in that market’-zone. Stop trying to sell stuff and help people instead. Help them with free advice, free information, guidance and passion and they will BUY from you.

Tony asked;

“Also, can you recommend an AR company that can help me do what I want to do?”

If your leads aren’t double optin you might have difficulty getting another company to do an import. They would likely do the import but require an optin again from each person which means you would lose a lot though at least the remaining ones would be responsive.

To do this make sure you make it ‘an event’ give them a freebie of some kind if they re-opt in. I use http://www.getresponsefast.com for my email marketing, you could try them.

Jason asked;

“In your opinion, what would be the best way to capture someones email/info (for my list)from Virtual Real Estate type information pages?”

You need to focus in one area that you have passion for, interest in and an understand of. Then find out what issue people in that area get frustrated about and then create material that answers some of that as ‘bait’ to get people on your list.

Lee said;

“What do you do with the people that opt-out?”

Hunt them down and ki.. Nothing! Laugh it off. You can send them to a page saying “Are you sure?” type think but I think it’s just best to wave them a courteous goodbye!

Antun asked;

“Can i make profit from my list if i am not selling anything on my site?”

As long as you sell something to your list. You can have 100% free info on your site but then promote products to your list. You don’t need YOUR OWN products though - just promote other people’s and then you don’t have to worry about customer service, you just get paid!

Norbert asked;

“Which one is better??

Option 1 - All on one site: this would be good, because even if I update 1 or 2 categories, my whole site is regularly updated, so in the eyes of the search engines the site look great. BUT, when building a list, someone who is interested in Acne and opts in, might not want to see emails about Cellulite. So, how do I know what the person wants to opt in for?

Of the list of markets you gave me - you need to pick the most lucrative. The one with the most people and the most money or combination thereof. Your efforts will always be diluted if you are trying to be all things to all people.

Pick one area and become an expert in that area and you will make more money as a result.

Will asked;

“I am interested in the technology you used to make the video that you used to get me to your blog. What technologies and/or server configuration(s) were used to 1) display the text message overlay that appeared during the video, and 2) jumped to your webpage after it was completed?”

Camtasia - http://www.techsmith.com

Thanks. I’ve got through all your questions - come on guys, you must have more list building questions for me!! I’m here waiting!! :-)

Question 1:
Should I try to sell my e-book by sending my traffic directly to my sales letter page and hope they buy OR should I send people to a forced opt-in page to get them on my list and try to “sell them” using my sequence of autoresponder emails?

Question 2:
How often should I email the subscribers on my list? I am on Matt Furey’s list and get emails pretty much every single day and I know that he is very successful at selling his products… Should I worry about people getting upset and unsubscribing or should I feel that the serious prospects/customers will stay on my list as long as I am providing value in my content?

By Patric. November 4th, 2006 at 7:24 pm

With getresponse, can you build multiple lists with one account? If so, are you doing it? And, is easy to manage?

By Kevin. November 4th, 2006 at 9:21 pm

I’m un-clear as to how you build a list if you have nobody actually seeing your opt-in form. It seems that the traffic has to be there first.

20 bucks or so a month for the AR service to only have a few visitors is/would be cost prohibitive to many newbies.

Isn’t concentrating on list building putting “The Cart before The Horse” ?

Michael your emails to me are ending up in my spam folder at yahoo, not sure why, but how do I avoid this when writing emails (plan to use eweber).

Mike

This is just a followup to your answer on my question:

You said you are using for your optin:

http://www.marketingmakeovernow.com

and for sending emails you use:

http://www.getresponsefast.com

My question is : Are these 2 products interconnected in such a way that the data (name and email) from the optin are automatically saved into the database of getresponsefast? Or do you still do manual copy pasting of data from one to another?

Im sure this will be a pain in the neck if we do the manual way esp if we have 10,000 subscribers.

thanks

I understand the value of out-sourcing and of “your time”. In your option what are the five best traffic generation techniques for your time/money spent. (Thank you for this great opportunity to ask you questions!)

Hi Michael

I have made a few video tutorials using camtasia.

I know you have used the free teaser video with great success and I would like to emulate this to get some opt-ins.

My question will probably sound silly but…

Do you host your own videos? For instance with the 40 vids which will make up this latest product… will you be putting them on your regular server and then letting buyers access this server and watch the videos.

If this is the case wont there be a huge amount of bandwidth eaten up, and will this pose a problem?

One of my colleagues hosted a video on a well known web host and let his list of 10,000 know about the video.

The host pulled his account down because he had so many people go and watch the video at the same time.

I am sure there are procedures in place to solve this problem - can you explain?

Thank you

John

Michael,

Nice stuff you have coming.

My problem is someone at some point “spammed” some of my Adsense pages by repeatedly clicking the links. Adsense shut me down and won’t let me set up a new account.

Is there some way around this? Like using Yahoo “adsense” service or something?

Thanks,
Fred

Brett asked;

“Should I try to sell my e-book by sending my traffic directly to my sales letter page and hope they buy OR should I send people to a forced opt-in page to get them on my list and try to “sell them” using my sequence of autoresponder emails?”

Both. You need a ‘money site’ that primarily sells your product (but also offer a sneak peek for people to sign up and get if they’re undecided).

Brett also asked;

“Should I worry about people getting upset and unsubscribing or should I feel that the serious prospects/customers will stay on my list as long as I am providing value in my content?”

Start as you mean to go on. As long as you keep providing valuable information and great offers don’t worry about frequency though do try and quieter periods rather than constant noise.

Patric asked;

“With getresponse, can you build multiple lists with one account? If so, are you doing it? And, is easy to manage?”

Yes. Yes. Yes. :-)

Kevin asked;

“I’m un-clear as to how you build a list if you have nobody actually seeing your opt-in form. It seems that the traffic has to be there first. Isn’t concentrating on list building putting “The Cart before The Horse” ?”

You do need traffic which is why I devote around a quarter of the entire course to how to get it for free. But you need to get your list strategy clear in your mind and ready to go first before you start getting traffic as you need list-traffic and not just any old traffic.

Theresa asked;

“My target market is the 40 to 70 year olds. how do I reach these people?”

Find out what they want and where they go online. It seems like a wide market - I would try to segment it more based on maybe sex, interests, income, geography etc.

Lee asked;

“Michael your emails to me are ending up in my spam folder at yahoo, not sure why, but how do I avoid this when writing emails (plan to use eweber).”

Most autoresponders (mine included) have spam checkers which check the email message to make sure it won’t get incorrectly flagged as spam though Yahoo! is notoriously difficult to get messages through to.

Ariel asked;

“You said you are using for your optin:

http://www.marketingmakeovernow.com

and for sending emails you use:

http://www.getresponsefast.com

My question is : Are these 2 products interconnected in such a way that the data (name and email) from the optin are automatically saved into the database of getresponsefast? Or do you still do manual copy pasting of data from one to another?”

They can be totally linked to one another - it’s all explained in the videos! :-)

Lee asked;

“In your option what are the five best traffic generation techniques for your time/money spent.”

Pay per click. Writing articles. Sending press releases. Creating viral reports. Sending emails (repeat traffic).

John asked;

“Do you host your own videos? For instance with the 40 vids which will make up this latest product… will you be putting them on your regular server and then letting buyers access this server and watch the videos.”

Yes - they will be on a dedicated server. I use http://www.kioskwebsitehosting.com

Fred asked;

“My problem is someone at some point “spammed” some of my Adsense pages by repeatedly clicking the links. Adsense shut me down and won’t let me set up a new account.

Is there some way around this? Like using Yahoo “adsense” service or something?”

Yes - you could use Yahoo! You can appeal against Google. Also - you can start spreading your risk by starting to sell other people’s products (affiliate marketing) and your own. I show you how to do all this when the videos go live on Tuesday 7th November! ;-)

Michael,

Just curious: if you use marketingmakeovernow.com why use getresponsefast.com instead of the AR built in marketingmakeovernow.com?

Carl

Carl - the autoresponder at getresponsefast.com is a lot better than the one at marketingmakeovernow.com and enables you to do a lot more things. Also - getresponsefast.com doesn’t have the landing page, tracking and audio tools etc. that marketingmakeovernow.com has!

Thanks,

Hi Michael

My question to you is how do you get so many respected industry experts to leave audio testimonials about your product, especially if like me you are a newbie and are not known at all.

Thanks and all the best.

I’m sorry I didn’t get here sooner Michael, I have some unanswered questions.

I would, however, like to thank you and the marketers with questions for giving me more food for thought. This was enjoyable reading.

Thanks.

Is it possible to use the same structure to distribute information - without selling anything?
